This Baldwin “M” Grand [#172821], at 5’1″, is a true “baby grand.” Its late owner, a professional musician and teacher, had bought it new from the Baldwin showroom on 58th Street in 1969. I have the original paperwork, and have been caring for it since the 1980’s.
Baldwin went out of business in 2000, ending a decades long pre-eminence as the piano of choice for non-classical musicians. In my piano tech career, I have had many customers who enjoyed these excellent and well-made pianos, and for some years I practiced on one, playing Brahms, Debussy, and Rachmaninoff.
This “M” is in overall excellent condition, and the soundboard and pinblock are perfect. The ebony finish had grown dull from a sunny Manhattan apartment, and the hammers did not have the sound they once had. The addition of a set of first class Abel hammers along with a professional French polish took care of these minor issues.
So now the piano looks terrific and has a fast light action with a lovely rich tone. It has power and brilliance, unique in a small piano format. With matching bench. Asking $6500
